The McLennan County Sheriff’s Office has launched a new website for tips about human trafficking.
WACO, Texas (KWTX) The McLennan County Sheriff’s Office has launched a new website for tips about human trafficking.
“This is a way we are reaching out to the public to help us and help the victims who are being trafficked,” Sheriff Parnell McNamara said.
The site allows people to report suspected human trafficking to the sheriff’s office, and anonymously.
“It gives people an immediate way to contact us and remain anonymous if they choose to do so,” McNamara said.
“We encourage the pubic to reach out if they believe something isn’t right, because it probably isn’t.”
Through the site, people can enter dates, suspects, locations, and other information for investigators to look into.
There’s also an option to submit photographs.
“It helps greatly when the public act as eyes and ears for law enforcement,” McNamara said.
“We solve so many of our crimes when the public comes forward and gives us tips about what they see or what they believe is going on and we appreciate that so much.”
The sheriff’s office has ramped up human trafficking efforts in recent years, taking the lead on the fight against traffickers.
The agency’s head human trafficking detective, Joseph Scaramucci, says they’ve helped more than 225 trafficking victims in the last four years.
He believes the website will lead them to many more victims.
“The ability to have citizens anonymously report human trafficking will be very beneficial to our victims,” said Scaramucci. “People in the community often tell us they wish they had reported something suspicious, but were too embarrassed to say something for fear of being wrong.”
“This provides anonymity, and will hopefully bring them a sense of safety reporting these cases,” said Scaramucci.
Scaramucci says they have about 15 cases of trafficking reported to them a month.
The website has already proved beneficial; officials say they had a credible case reported to them through the site Tuesday.
