HOUSTON, TEXAS – SEPTEMBER 9: McLennan County’s district attorney, Vic Feazell, leaves the county courthouse where he was arrested on a 12-count federal indictment. He said his arrest was retaliation for a 1984 McLennan County grand jury probe that questioned Department of Public Safety tactics. Texas (Roy Bragg/Houston Chronicle via Getty Images)

Forty years ago today, Vic woke up and just had a bad feeling that he was going to be arrested. When he went outside to his car, the Cessna flying circles over the neighborhood pretty much confirmed it for him. Greg had just turned 4 on the 10th and he and I left the house to go to The Kettle for breakfast. When we pulled out of the driveway, a “K” car pulled behind me and the driver was a nerd with a bad haircut so I figured it was FBI. It was. Greg Rampton was his name and after the arrest of Vic and him taking me and Greg out of the restaurant in a bad manner, the FBI transferred him. He then fkd up RUBY RIDGE.

Greg and I barely sat down and ordered when the FBI agents came in with guns and took me and Greg out of the restaurant without paying for the waffles. They made Greg sit in the back seat and he didin’t like it at all, he knew enough of what was going on and he knew what a gun was. Did this do our son any good?
No. Are they responsible for him dying or his drug abuse? NO and I didn’t say that, however, like others of his generation, he found the world rather a hopeless place with no justice. I can’t argue with that and none of this helped anything.
This was before cell phones for you younger people so the next word I had on Vic was his arrest every 18 minutes on CNN. Since the FBI wouldn’t let Greg nor I do anything or go anywhere, we sat on the sofa in the den and watched Vic get arrested over and over again. My mom, then 73, came from Taylor and had no idea what was going on. She thought I had some women over for coffee. Ha. Finally, she came in and the FBI made her sit with us on the sofa.
The rest of the “Search” they conducted with my Czech mom and I calling them horrible names in Czech that have no literal English meaning, the closest is the penis of a dog.
Vic called me at one point and I knew he was being recorded, so did he. He told me NOT to bond him out. I told him I wouldn’t and he told me that no matter what I shouldn’t bond him out, even if he decided to go on a hunger strike.
(okay, this is the 1980’s that was still a “thing” back there, google it)
Vic was arrested for taking 18K in bribes in the form of campaign contributions. He was also charged with 13 counts of Mail Fraud.
This was the crazy charge, Mail Fraud. Back then the DPS had an officer AT THE COURTHOUSE and when the DA’s office got a stack of “Dispositions” (what happened to a case), Dawn Baldwin would just walk it over to the deputy. The Feds knew that, didn’t care, AND the fact that there were no envelopes was the subject of a Motion for the Defense not to bring it up. The FEDS also had an order in place that stated that the Feds not finding “the money” was not a defense too.
Great.
After this, I was accused of shooting (and missing) at Walter Smith, fingerprinted by the FBI AT THE COURTHOUSE, had “Brenda”, Walter’s “recapture the past” third wife call the papers AND Walter knew better. However, they did this to “mess” with me and get even with me for Doug DeCluitt, in fact, Walt and Doug had their fingers all over this.
Long story short, watch NETFLIX THE CONFESSION KILLER, if you’re interested, if not, that’s cool too, today is just a day for me to look back, write Vic and the few others still living and remembering where they were with me, a day to miss our son, and a day to shake my head because it’s no better.
Vic was found “not guilty” after a six week trial. The jury only took two hours and made a statement that “Vic was framed” because of Henry Lee Lucas.
As we drive back from Taylor, Texas where my mom lived and was taking care of Greg, who we picked up to go home, we were excited about getting our lives back and hopeful.
That did not last long.
They were sore losers and that has not changed one bit. They have sons, and some of the players, Bob Prince, for example, TEXAS RANGER, are still living and still saying Henry Lucas killed 300 people.
I met Henry, I’m bigger than Henry Lee Lucas was, my gawd people, he was 5’8 and probably a good 130.
Vic is a hero everywhere but here. Vic goes out in Austin, he draws a crowd, same with him (and me) in Dallas, here, well, the big MEN of Waco need those Texas Ranger heroes. The Ranger Hall of Shame is here and we have to worship that which doesn’t exist except in the pants of our narcissistic menfolk.
Me? Well, none of it made me a better person and having to explain to young people who BY NATURE get a sense of “justie” at age 5, that justice in Waco is accidental is not easy.
The “them” of the “They” and this is how we do it is alive and well, and will not go away until MEN make MEN IN OFFICE ANSWER QUESTIONS AND BE ACCOUNTABLE.
Also, our leaders, sad lot of greedy old men that they are, believe that they are the avenging arm of the angry god and protect other Baylor men no matter what. Just how it is.
Ask around, you want to grow up and be a member of this community? You have ambition and a lot to give? Well, you’d better not have a law degree from Oklahoma, it all better be from Baylor or you’ll never make it.
To all of you still left who remember that young DA, he was 35 when this happened, and the ‘GO GET EM VIC” stickers, a “thank you”.

This brought back so many memories.
