Apparently, the McLennan County Sheriff’s Department has adopted a brand-new standard for reckless driving: if the person bouncing around in the back of the truck is a man, just call it an unauthorized rodeo and let everyone go home.

According to his account, this man was hanging on for dear life while the truck traveled approximately 80 miles per hour down Talbert Ranch Road. He says he was tossed around like a ball in a pinball machine, launched into the air when they hit a dip, and may have broken his wrist—all while he was on the phone with dispatch.

Yet when deputies arrived, nobody went to jail. The driver was reportedly allowed to leave in the truck, while the injured man was left standing beside the road. Perhaps the department’s new motto is: “To protect, serve, and provide roadside drop-off services.”

Seriously, what does someone have to do to get arrested around here—launch the victim completely into the next county?

If the roles had been reversed and a woman had been clinging to the back of a truck traveling 80 miles per hour while an angry man drove, the handcuffs would probably have been out before the engine cooled. But because the alleged victim was a man, deputies apparently treated it like an unfortunate carnival ride: “Sorry about your wrist, sir. The Tilt-A-Whirl is now closed. Find your own way home.”

This was not a marital disagreement. It was not a little joyride. If his account is accurate, his life was deliberately placed in danger. One sharp turn or sudden stop could have turned this ridiculous situation into a fatal one.

The public deserves to know why no arrest was made, why the driver was allowed to leave, and why an allegedly injured man was abandoned on the roadside. Equal protection under the law should not depend on whether the victim is wearing boots or high heels.

McLennan County deserves law enforcement—not a roadside comedy show where the alleged victim is the punchline.
