Friday: Some records have been removed from this story.
Here is a statement from Moroso’s followed by ALL the records via public information. For all of you still making up stories and worried about a tree (God help us) , try reading the police report and actually getting some information for a change. WTF already? You have a drunk young man, DiCampli and things got out of hand. Wring your hands all you want to THIS is what happened, witness statements etc follow the statement and a sworn so, except for those of you who refuse to be reasonable this should settle this. Right?

To Our Friends and Loyal Customers,
This message is intended only for those who’ve supported Moroso Wood Fired Pizzeria over the years. It’s not meant for public release, but I feel it’s important to share some personal information directly with you — the people who matter most to us.
As many of you know, I was involved in an incident outside the restaurant in April. Since then, a lot of false and misleading stories have been spread — especially on social media — creating confusion and painting an untrue picture of what actually happened. Until now, I’ve remained silent out of respect for the Waco Police Department and their investigation. That investigation is now complete, and the facts are public record.
I’ve since learned that Massimo DiCampli believed I had been speaking negatively about his restaurant. That rumor is false. Regardless of what he may have believed, nothing can justify what he and his companion did that night.
So here is the truth: – On the night of April 16, 2025, I was assaulted from behind in our parking lot by two men as I was getting into my car.
– One of them was Massimo DiCampli, a local restaurateur. The other has a prior criminal conviction for assault with injury.
– They ambushed me without warning or provocation.
– I carry a small pocketknife that I use for opening boxes in the restaurant. In the moment, I reached for it — not to cause harm, but to protect myself and hopefully scare them off. In the struggle, the knife made contact with DiCampli and grazed his side.
– That gave me the moment I needed to break away and run back inside to call the police.
– Police responded immediately. After spending several hours at the scene and interviewing everyone involved, they concluded that I acted in self-defense.
– DiCampli went to the hospital by his own choice. His injury was minor — approximately an inch long and superficial.
– Two days later, Waco PD’s Assault Division opened a full investigation under Detective Lyle Smith.
– Unbeknownst to my attackers, security cameras captured the entire event from start to finish.
– Their sworn statements to police did not match the footage. The police report describes their accounts as “inaccurate.”
– The video clearly shows that I was the victim of an unprovoked assault.
– As a result, DiCampli was arrested and charged with assault.
– His hospital records, subpoenaed by the police, show that he was legally intoxicated at the time of the attack.
Despite all this, a different version of the story continues to circulate. In some tellings, I supposedly approached DiCampli and stabbed him for no reason. That is simply untrue. It didn’t happen. But lies, once told, have a way of spreading faster than truth. That’s why I feel compelled to speak now.
This has been one of the most painful and difficult times of my life. For me, and for Robyn. Not only were we shaken by the violence of that night, but we’ve had to live under the weight of rumors, threats, and a campaign to discredit our business and our character. We’ve lost income. We’ve lost sleep. And we’ve sometimes felt helpless in the face of it all.
But what we haven’t lost is our love for this community or our gratitude to those who have stood by us. Your prayers, your kind words, and your continued support have meant everything.
I hope that by sharing these facts with you now, we can begin to move forward. Silence should never be mistaken for guilt — and truth deserves its voice, too.
With sincere thanks,
Dan Moroso
