I was returning to my city from the Hewitt area when I heard Deputy Robison (SO 184) call out over the radio that he had a vehicle fleeing from him in Waco. Deputy Robison works for the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Robison stated that the vehicle was heading southbound on I-35. I pulled over to the side of I-35 and waited in case the pursuit reached me. I saw Deputy Robison pass by me on the interstate, but I did not see a vehicle in front of him. Deputy Robison then called out over the radio that the vehicle he was pursuing was on the access road.I was able to see a vehicle travelling southbound on the access road at a high rate of speed. I followed behind the other units until the vehicle crashed at I-35 and Moonlight drive. The vehicle was upside down against the wall on the grass underneath the Moonlight Drive overpass. The vehicle had also caught fire. I went back to my patrol vehicle and retrieved a crowbar from the cargo area. I returned to the fire and broke out the driver’s side window with my crowbar.I also attempted to use my crowbar to try to force open the driver’s side door, but was driven back by the flames and heat.Officers were unable to extract the occupant and were eventually all forced away due to the fire. The vehicle continued to burn until the arrival of the fire department.I pulled a case number for assist outside agency. I gave Cpl Tippie a business card with the case. I informed Cpl Tippie that I had in car and body cam video of our attempts to extricate the driver. I asked Cpl Tippie if he needed any additional assistance from me and he said he did not.I then informed dispatch that I was clear from the scene, had a supplemental report, and would be assisting another deputy in responding to a pending call.
