Great men are almost always bad men.” Lord Acton in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton in 1887.This quote from Lord Acton sums up what I observed while at MCSO. More than once I heard, “He’s an elected official, he can do what he wants”, or “HR only offers suggestions, we don’t have to follow their recommendations.” It was this mentality and the unreasonable demand that unquestioned, blind loyalty was required that led to my retirement 2 years before I planned to.Was I a perfect deputy, no, I made mistakes because I’m human. I did believe in the job and did it up until I could no longer tolerate the toxic environment that had been created. Asking faithful employees to take a polygraph because of a website they didn’t like was the final straw. Now before certain people write me off as just another disgruntled employee, I was there and saw everything I’m referencing. Just look at all of the HR complaints that were filed and ignored, mine included. The sad part is, the 1st four years under Sheriff McNamara were great. It was during this current term that everything started getting toxic and untenable.My 1st day of retirement I was called to testify in a case I was involved in with Amber Aguirre. I’ve known Amber for a long time-she fingerprinted me for my Jailer’s position when I was hired under Sheriff Lynch. I spent the day with Amber, and Jeff as well, as he was beginning his tenure as an investigator for the DA’s office. I’ve spent time with them both numerous times since. The one thing that always stands out with Jeff is integrity, accountability and his belief in promotion based on merit, not who you know. Jeff is sincere-he will look you in the eye and you know he means what he says and will follow through. There is no hidden agenda. Jeff Aguirre is going to be the Sheriff for the people of McLennan County. His integrity and honesty will set the benchmark for the MCSO as a whole. Those that stay or rejoin MCSO will also have those same values. Now, I have no dog in this fight-I’m out of law enforcement and enjoy being out of the stress. I’m not posting this in an effort to secure future employment. I wish I was a couple of years younger to be able to work under Jeff’s administration. It would be great.Do I have any influence or a big money contribution-no. But just like anyone else concerned with this election, I can bring 40ish votes and so can anyone else. That’s how change is made-one vote at a time.So again, Voting for Jeff Aguirre is the only choice.
